The development of poliovirus (PV) vaccines was one of the great public health achievements of the twentieth century. However, there are limitations to the present vaccines. Their effectiveness, particularly against PV type 3, is lower in developing countries than in the developed world. In a prospective trial performed in Oman, researchers showed that using a supplemental dose of inactivated-poliovirus vaccine (IPV) significantly enhanced the immune response against PV type 3.
