Many lesbians and their clinicians assume that sexual relationships between women carry a low risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). However, there are few data to either support or refute this assumption. These researchers analyzed STI risks in lesbian and bisexual relationships.
The analysis was based on questionnaires from 286 local, self-identified lesbian, bisexual, heterosexual, unsure/questioning, and "other" women recruited at a gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender event in a large Midwestern city. Median age was 31 (range, 18-83); most participants were educated beyond high school, and most (87 percent) were white. By self-identification, 198 participants (69 percent) were lesbians.
