Although the adverse effects of HIV on malaria morbidity and mortality have been well documented in pregnant women and in those with both partial and absent malarial immunity, less is known about the effect of malaria on HIV morbidity and mortality. To learn more about this, researchers conducted a prospective cohort study of 367 HIV-infected adults in a malarious area of Malawi. Of the 334 subjects who were without detectable parasitemia at baseline, 148 had at least one episode of malaria during follow-up and received antimalarial treatment. Of these, 77 had HIV viral load measurements before, during, and after the malaria episode, allowing researchers to carefully monitor the effect of acute episodes of malaria on viral load.
