The injectable implant Radiesse can now be used to treat facial lipoatrophy in HIV-infected patients. The FDA granted approval for this indication on December 22, 2006, based on the results of a 100-person study showing significant improvement in cheek thickness 6 months after initial injection. No major adverse effects were seen. Radiesse is the second injectable treatment available for facial lipoatrophy, with Sculptra being the first.
