Use of thymidine analogues (d4T and AZT) has been linked to an increased risk for mitochondrial toxicity, which can lead to lipoatrophy. In the Women’s Interagency HIV Study, investigators evaluated the effects of d4T exposure and discontinuation among 734 HIV-positive women who took d4T sometime between July 1999 and March 2005; 574 discontinued it during that period. Anthropometric measurements (weight and waist, chest, upper-arm, hip, and mid-thigh circumference) were taken every 6 months and compared with those from 698 HIV-negative controls.
