Previous studies have shown that women of color are often underrepresented in clinical trials of antiretroviral therapy. Enrollment of nonrepresentative patient populations, as a result of either patient choice or provider selection, can bias study results and generate conclusions with limited applicability. To shed light on this issue, investigators evaluated rates and reasons for nonenrollment in a large prospective cohort study on interventions to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission and to protect maternal health.
