An expert panel convened by the WHO and UNAIDS has concluded that male circumcision is an important intervention to reduce the risk for heterosexually acquired HIV infection in men. Countries with high rates of heterosexual HIV infection and low rates of male circumcision are urged to consider scaling up access to male circumcision services. Such services should be offered as part of a comprehensive HIV prevention package that includes testing and counseling services, provision of condoms, and treatment for sexually transmitted infections.
