Low bone-mineral density (BMD) has been observed in HIV-infected individuals, and some studies suggest that PI use plays a role. To examine the associations among HIV infection, antiretroviral therapy, lifestyle factors, and BMD, investigators analyzed cross-sectional data from a New York City cohort that included 328 HIV-positive men and 231 HIV-negative men at risk for HIV infection. All study participants were 49 or older (mean age, 54.7 among HIV-infected men and 55.8 among HIV-uninfected men); 56% of subjects were black, and 89% had used illicit drugs.
