Clinicians are eagerly anticipating the release of new antiretrovirals to broaden today’s limited options for patients infected with highly drug-resistant virus. Results of an industry-sponsored, blinded, phase II study suggest that the new integrase inhibitor raltegravir will not disappoint.
A total of 179 patients with documented triple-class resistance and virologic failure on an established antiretroviral regimen were randomized to receive raltegravir, at one of three doses, or placebo, in addition to an optimized combination of two to seven other antiretrovirals.
