Resistance to antiretroviral drugs is most often a consequence of inadequate drug exposure with subsequent generation of new resistance mutations during cycles of virus replication. In some cases, however, people become infected with resistant viruses and thus face diminished treatment options from the outset. Previous reports suggest that the rate of transmitted resistance is increasing in most parts of the world with good access to HIV treatments (ACC Jan 4 2006). However, new data from the U.K. suggest that the rate may have leveled off recently or even declined.
