Is unboosted atazanavir an adequate substitute for other PIs in virologically suppressed patients? Investigators explored this question in a randomized, prospective, industry-sponsored study involving 419 HIV-infected patients, all of whom were stable on PI-based regimens for at least 3 months, had viral loads <50 copies/mL, and had no history of treatment failure on PI-based regimens. They were randomized in a 2:1 ratio to switch their PIs to unboosted atazanavir (400 mg once daily) or to maintain their current regimens.
