Several studies have evaluated the effects of thiazolidinediones on HIV-associated lipodystrophy, with mostly negative results. In the latest such study, investigators conducted an industry-supported, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of rosiglitazone (4 mg daily for 24 weeks) among HIV-infected patients who had at least one feature of lipodystrophy.
Although the researchers originally calculated that they would need 252 participants to detect a statistically significant difference in arm fat between the two treatment groups, only 96 patients were enrolled in the study.
