The 4th IAS Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention took place this year at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre in New South Wales, Australia. The conference was truly international in both subject matter and attendance, with more than 5000 participants attending from 133 countries. Topics were distributed among three tracks: clinical research, treatment, and care (composing 61% of submitted abstracts); biomedical prevention (22%); and basic science (17%). In all, fewer than 1000 of the 3100 abstracts submitted were accepted for oral or poster presentation, making this the most selective IAS Pathogenesis meeting held thus far.
Given that travel to Australia from the U.S. is such a major undertaking, attendance among ACC editors was lower than that for many other scientific HIV meetings. Nonetheless, we did have several ACC editors at the meeting, and they have chosen to highlight those presentations and posters that seem most likely to have the greatest practical effect on clinical care today (see below).
