Studies that were conducted before the introduction of combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) suggested that pregnancy might be associated with more-rapid progression of HIV disease, but what about in the current treatment era?
Investigators evaluated rates of AIDS-defining events and death among 759 women who received care at an HIV clinic in Nashville, Tennessee, between January 1, 1997, and December 31, 2004. Approximately 18% of the women (139) became pregnant at least once during the study period.
