Although directly observed therapy is now the cornerstone of effective tuberculosis treatment, adapting the technique for HIV treatment has proven difficult: The extended duration of antiretroviral therapy (ART) and the multiple daily drug doses are among the reasons usually cited. Now, Yale researchers have reported success from a randomized, controlled trial of short-term directly administered ART (DAART) among active drug users.
A total of 141 HIV-infected adults who were eligible for combination ART with once- or twice-daily regimens were randomized to receive directly administered or self-administered therapy.
