Although the prevalence of unprotected anal intercourse was similar across all racial groups in Baltimore, the prevalence of HIV infection was nine times higher among black men than among white men.
From 1996 through 2000, researchers in seven U.S. cities interviewed young men who have sex with men (MSM) about their high-risk sexual behavior and offered them HIV testing. Now, these researchers have analyzed the Baltimore data specifically, to document the existence of racial disparities.
The overall prevalence of HIV infection was 12% among the 843 men (age range, 15–29) who participated in the survey. Striking racial differences were seen for both HIV prevalence (27% among non-Hispanic blacks, 10% among Hispanics, and 3% among non-Hispanic whites) and annual HIV incidence (11%, 0%, and 1%, respectively).
