Blacks are at substantially higher risk for HIV-related renal disease than are whites. Now, a report from a cohort of U.S. veterans places this risk into the context of another well-recognized cause of renal disease, diabetes.
From October 2000 through September 2001, more than 2 million adults underwent serum creatinine testing at Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers. Of these, 15,135 (0.8%) were HIV infected, and 594,430 (29.5%) had diabetes. The principal outcome of interest was time from entry into the cohort to onset of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Blacks accounted for 54% of the HIV-infected population, 17% of the diabetic population, and 15% of those with neither condition.
