Decreased bone-mineral density (BMD) seems to be common among HIV-infected patients. Possible determinants include the duration and severity of HIV infection, type and duration of antiretroviral therapy (ART), menopausal status, hormone levels, and smoking status. In the general population, calcium, vitamin D, and bisphosphonates improve BMD and reduce the risk for fractures. Is this combination also beneficial in HIV-infected patients?
