Understanding the milieu in which HIV risk behavior occurs is paramount to the implementation of appropriate HIV prevention strategies. Important differences exist in the risk environments of various communities, and prevention strategies might need to be tailored accordingly. In this cross-sectional study, researchers examined HIV prevalence and risk behaviors among 504 members of the New York City “house ball community.” This community consists predominantly of young blacks and Latinos — typically men who have sex with men (MSM), or male-to-female transgender persons — who live communally and participate in house-based competitions (“balls”), not unlike a modern fraternity system.
