HIV treatment guidelines are updated regularly to reflect new data on efficacy and toxicity. What constitutes a preferred regimen for initial antiretroviral therapy (ART) is a major focus of these updates. Although many combinations can suppress HIV replication successfully, optimal regimens provide durable responses that require minimal drug changes. As part of the Swiss HIV Cohort Study (which follows most HIV-infected patients in the country), investigators evaluated the durability of antiretroviral regimens among 1866 patients who initiated ART between 2000 and 2005.
The proportion of patients who changed regimens in the first year of treatment was nearly constant over time: 48.8% in 2000–2001, 43.8% in 2002–2003, and 44.3% in 2004–2005.…
