Several studies have documented the improved outcomes of HIV-infected patients in industrialized, high-income countries since combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) became the standard of care in the late 1990s. Now, ART Cohort Collaboration researchers provide updated estimates of survival for such patients.
The researchers analyzed data from 14 cohorts in Canada, Europe, and the U.S. (43,355 patients, all of whom were treatment-naive when starting combination ART, and 2050 deaths). Using life tables constructed from age-specific mortality rates, they estimated life expectancies for persons who started treatment in 1996–1999 (18,587 patients), 2000–2002 (13,914 patients), and 2003–2005 (10,854 patients).
