Unlike the annual Retrovirus Conference, which focuses on clinical and basic science, the biennial International AIDS Conference covers a diverse range of topics, many of which are more psychosocial and cultural than medical. This year’s conference, held in the vast Banamex Convention Center in Mexico City, was the first to occur in Latin America and reflected the organizers’ commitment to alternating the location of the conference between developing and developed countries (2 years ago, it was in Toronto; in 2010, it will be in Vienna, Austria).
