Little is known about the safety and efficacy of the yellow fever vaccine (17DV) in HIV-infected patients. Therefore, current U.S. guidelines recommend offering the vaccine only to those HIV-infected travelers who are asymptomatic and cannot avoid potential exposure to infected mosquitoes.
In the present analysis, investigators retrospectively identified 102 HIV-infected patients in the Swiss HIV Cohort Study who had traveled to tropical countries and received at least one dose of 17DV. At the time of vaccination, 65% of the patients had CD4 counts >350 cells/mm3; only 7% had CD4 counts <200 cells/mm3. Fewer than half the patients had viral loads <50 copies/mL.
