Even with the advent of potent antiretroviral therapy (ART), deaths from AIDS-defining events still occur, particularly in patients who start treatment at low CD4-cell counts. However, some AIDS-defining events carry higher mortality risks than others. To quantify those risks, investigators pooled prospective data from 31,620 patients (participating in 15 clinical cohorts) who had no prior AIDS diagnoses when they initiated potent ART.
During a median follow-up of 43 months, AIDS-defining events were diagnosed in 2262 patients (7.2%); 1146 patients died, including 377 with AIDS-defining events.
