Lopinavir/ritonavir (Kaletra) has been on the market for almost 10 years, but only now are sufficient human data available to affirm the drug’s safety during pregnancy.
Nearly 1000 women who were enrolled in the Antiretroviral Pregnancy Registry took lopinavir/r during pregnancy — about one third during the first trimester and almost all as part of a combination regimen. The overall prevalence of birth defects in this cohort (2.4%) was no different from that seen in a population-based cohort of uninfected women. Prevalence did not differ significantly by trimester of exposure (first vs. second or third), and nothing among the 23 birth defects that did occur suggested a common etiology.
