Reports from recent clinical trials of antiretroviral therapy always include information about the effects of treatment on lipid levels. However, these effects are often reported differently among trials, making cross-study comparisons difficult. Now, researchers have conducted a systematic review of studies of first-line regimens, with a focus on changes in plasma lipid levels.
Studies were included if they had the following features: ≥50 treatment-naive patients followed for ≥48 weeks; use of efavirenz or a ritonavir-boosted PI, plus a fixed pair of NRTIs; and data available on mean or median levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, and HDL at baseline and at week 48.
