Maraviroc, a CCR5 antagonist, is effective in treatment-experienced patients with R5-tropic HIV (JW AIDS Clin Care Sep 10 2007). In a manufacturer-funded trial, researchers assessed maraviroc’s safety and efficacy in patients with dual- or mixed-tropic virus (simply called “non-R5 virus”), viral loads ≥5000 copies/mL, and documented resistance to at least two classes of antiretroviral therapy (ART) or at least 3 months of experience receiving drugs in three ART classes. In all, 167 such patients were randomized to receive optimized background ART plus once-daily maraviroc, twice-daily maraviroc, or placebo.
