Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is the most common HIV-related malignancy. To characterize clinical outcomes of HIV-infected patients with KS, researchers analyzed prospective data from 254 patients in England (96% men; 15% black; mean age, 39) with KS proven by biopsy between 1996 and 2008. Their median CD4 count was 185 cells/mm3 on KS diagnosis. Prior to KS diagnosis, 12% of the patients had an AIDS-defining illness. Of the 48 patients who had been receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) for at least 3 months before KS diagnosis, only 18 had undetectable HIV viral loads.
