HIV infection can increase women's susceptibility to the development and persistence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Persistent infection with high-risk HPV types can lead to cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer.
To assess the potential role of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in mitigating HPV prevalence, researchers prospectively studied 146 ART-naive HIV-infected women (minimum age, 13 years) who had enrolled in 35 ART clinical trials in the U.S. and Puerto Rico between January 2001 and May 2003. The prevalence of HPV DNA in cervical specimens was measured before ART was initiated and again at 24, 48, and 96 weeks after initiation. No specific ART regimens were mandated, but all were combinations of at least three drugs.
