To determine whether ordering HIV resistance testing is associated with improved survival, researchers analyzed observational data from 2699 participants in the 10-site HIV Outpatient Study. From 1999 through 2005, all had at least one HIV viral-load measurement >1000 copies/mL.
Genotypic and phenotypic susceptibility testing was performed in 807 of 2107 treatment-experienced patients and in 108 of 592 treatment-naive patients. Patients who underwent such testing were more likely than their untested counterparts to be white, to be men who have sex with men, and to have private health insurance — and less likely to have hepatitis C infection and to have used intravenous drugs (all variables associated with better outcomes).
