Maraviroc — Probably Not the Silver Bullet for Patients with Impaired CD4-Cell Recovery

In a small retrospective study, maraviroc did not significantly improve CD4-cell counts in patients with discordant responses to combination antiretroviral therapy.

Interest in the use of maraviroc as an immune-modulating agent initially arose from the MERIT trial, which showed that maraviroc was associated with better CD4-cell recovery (despite a higher failure rate overall) than efavirenz (JW AIDS Clin Care Sept 10 2007). Now, investigators have conducted a small retrospective study to explore the potential immunologic benefit of adding maraviroc to the antiretroviral regimens of patients who have achieved virologic control but not adequate CD4-cell recovery.
