In a previous analysis from the SMART study, elevated baseline levels of the biomarkers D-dimer and interleukin (IL)-6 were associated with increased risk for death (JW AIDS Clin Care Nov 24 2008). However, most of the deaths in the SMART study were not caused by traditional AIDS-related opportunistic diseases (ODs), leaving open the question of whether inflammation and coagulation biomarkers influence the risk for such diseases.
Now, SMART investigators have conducted a nested case-control study to answer this question, using data from 91 study participants who developed ODs and 182 matched controls who did not.
