Hyperlipidemia is a frequent complication of boosted PI use, but the choice of treatments is limited by cytochrome P450–mediated drug interactions. Pravastatin and rosuvastatin are two of the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors considered safe for use with PIs. (Others are atorvastatin and fluvastatin.)
In a randomized, open-label, head-to-head comparison conducted in France with support from the manufacturer of rosuvastatin, 42 patients on boosted PIs received pravastatin at a dose of 40 mg daily, and 41 received rosuvastatin at 10 mg daily.
