Distrust of the medical system can hinder access and adherence to treatment. In this study, investigators explored whether conspiracy beliefs about HIV infection and antiretroviral therapy (ART) were associated with medication adherence among HIV-infected black men receiving ART.
A total of 214 men (mean age, 44) were recruited through social service agencies and HIV clinics in the Los Angeles area. More than half were in unstable housing situations, and 40% had very low incomes. In a baseline survey, 64% agreed with at least one of nine conspiracy beliefs, and 48% agreed with at least two.
