Although non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) has become less common among HIV-infected patients since the advent of potent antiretroviral therapy (ART), the risk remains elevated. To determine the immunologic and virologic factors associated with this risk, investigators evaluated data from a large clinic-based cohort of HIV-infected individuals in Baltimore. Of the 3025 study participants, 40% were injection-drug users, and 27% were men who have sex with men.
Between 1989 and 2006, 65 study participants (2.1%) developed NHL. Incidence peaked in 1992 and then fell dramatically in 1994, well before the widespread use of potent ART. Interestingly, three quarters of the NHL cases were diagnosed during or after 1996, and half these cases were in patients…
