Liver disease is highly prevalent among HIV-infected patients and is a leading cause of non–AIDS-related mortality. In this report, investigators explore the epidemiology of a common, treatable cause of liver disease — hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection — among 2769 HIV-infected individuals participating in the U.S. Military HIV Natural History Study.
Patients were defined as having HBV infection if they met any of the following criteria:
Concurrently positive for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and hepatitis B core antibody (HBcAb)
Concurrently positive for HBcAb and hepatitis B surface antibody (HBsAb)
Positive for either HBsAg or HBcAb on two separate occasions
