More Data and Answers from AIDS Clinical Trials Group Study 5202

In a highly anticipated session at the 2010 Retrovirus Conference, researchers presented results on the nucleoside comparison in the low viral-load stratum — and on the “third drug” comparison in the entire study population.

In the AIDS Clinical Trials Group 5202 study, 1857 HIV-infected, treatment-naive patients were randomized to receive combinations of either abacavir/3TC or tenofovir/FTC and either ritonavir-boosted atazanavir or efavirenz; randomization was stratified by viral load at screening (< vs. >100,000 copies/mL). Investigators previously reported that in the high viral-load stratum, abacavir/3TC was associated with a higher rate of virologic failure than tenofovir/FTC (JW AIDS Clin Care Jan 15 2010).

At the 2010 Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections, Eric Daar presented 96-week data from the low viral-load stratum, showing that all four regimens had high rates of virologic success, ranging from 87.4% to 90.3%, with no significant …
