In the AIDS Clinical Trials Group 5202 study, 1857 HIV-infected, treatment-naive patients were randomized to receive combinations of either abacavir/3TC or tenofovir/FTC and either ritonavir-boosted atazanavir or efavirenz; randomization was stratified by viral load at screening (< vs. >100,000 copies/mL). Investigators previously reported that in the high viral-load stratum, abacavir/3TC was associated with a higher rate of virologic failure than tenofovir/FTC (JW AIDS Clin Care Jan 15 2010).
