The BENCHMRK studies demonstrated the short-term (48-week) efficacy of the integrase inhibitor raltegravir for the treatment of triple-class resistant HIV infection (JW AIDS Clin Care Jul 23 2008). Now, long-term (96-week) efficacy data are available from a manufacturer-sponsored phase II study.
Patients with documented resistance to at least one drug in each of the three major antiretroviral classes (nucleoside and nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors and protease inhibitors) were randomized in a double-blind fashion to receive raltegravir (200, 400, or 600 mg twice daily) or placebo, each in combination with a background regimen that was optimized based on genotypic and phenotypic testing.
