Drug interactions involving antiretrovirals are fairly common, but they are often not recognized by the treating physician until they result in an adverse event or viral resistance. To determine the extent of this problem, researchers conducted a 4-week audit in an adult ambulatory HIV clinic.
Patients were eligible for inclusion if they were seen during the study period and were receiving at least one antiretroviral. For each patient, physicians were asked to record all medications being used, including nonprescription medications and herbal supplements, and then to identify all potential drug interactions that could be clinically significant (defined as those that could cause excess toxicity or loss of therapeutic effect).
