Since the advent of potent antiretroviral therapy (ART), AIDS-related mortality rates have declined substantially, shifting the focus of HIV care toward non–AIDS-related health problems. In this analysis, researchers assessed trends in mortality rates and causes of death among HIV-infected patients in the modern ART era. The analysis included all 2482 deaths that occurred among DAD study participants (>33,000 overall) between 1999 and 2008.
During the study period, the overall mortality rate decreased from 16.9 to 9.6 per 1000 patient-years. The main causes of death were AIDS (in 743 patients), liver failure or liver disease (in 341), cardiovascular disease (in 289), and non–AIDS-related cancer (in 286).
