The HIV transmission category “MSM” (men who have sex with men) now accounts for about half of reported incident HIV infections and two thirds of prevalent infections in the U.S. Research indicates, however, that this risk group actually includes several distinct populations who carry very different HIV risks.
A total of 4319 U.S. men, ages 18 to 59, were interviewed about sexual behavior and tested for HIV and herpes simplex virus (HSV)-2 as part of national health surveys in 2001 through 2006. Overall, 206 (5%) reported ever having had sex with a man (referred to herein as MSM), including 111 (54%) who had done so in the previous year (“recently”).
