Adherence to antiretroviral therapy has long been known to be a critical contributor to HIV treatment success. Little is known, however, about whether it affects virologic response differently depending on the drug.
To explore this issue with respect to protease inhibitors (PIs), investigators evaluated data from the ARTEMIS study, a randomized trial comparing initial treatment with ritonavir-boosted darunavir versus lopinavir/ritonavir, each together with tenofovir/FTC (JW AIDS Clin Care Aug 11 2008). Adherence was assessed repeatedly throughout the 96-week study using a standardized questionnaire and was validated with self-reported missed doses and plasma drug concentrations.
