Comparisons of abacavir and tenofovir continue to be of great interest. In the open-label ASSERT study (sponsored by the manufacturer of abacavir), 392 HIV-infected, treatment-naive patients who tested negative for the HLA-B*5701 genotype were randomized to receive abacavir/3TC or tenofovir/FTC, each together with efavirenz. The primary endpoint was the 48-week change in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), calculated using the MDRD (Modification of Diet in Renal Disease) equation. Changes in biomarkers of tubular secretion were assessed as a secondary endpoint.
