Detection of acute and early HIV infection, despite its importance, has been difficult to accomplish. Pooled nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT) has proven effective in several pilot studies (JW AIDS Clin Care May 11 2005 and Dec 18 2006), but it has not been broadly implemented in HIV testing programs, in part because of cost and laboratory requirements (JW AIDS Clin Care Jan 11 2010).
