HIV infection is particularly burdensome in the African-American community, where both incidence and prevalence are disproportionately high, and heterosexual transmission is unusually common. In this randomized trial, researchers evaluated whether a behavioral intervention geared specifically toward African-American heterosexual couples would reduce high-risk sexual practices.
The trial involved 535 HIV-serodiscordant couples, in which at least one partner was African-American. Half the couples attended a series of 2-hour counseling sessions on sexual-risk reduction that incorporated cultural beliefs about family and community (the intervention group), and half attended sessions on chronic disease prevention (the control group).
