Non-AIDS clinical events have become important contributors to morbidity and mortality among HIV-infected patients, as demonstrated in a recent analysis from the EuroSIDA study.
The analysis involved 12,844 HIV-infected patients (73% men; 88% white) who had prospective follow-up of any duration between 2001 and mid-2009. At baseline, median age was 39, and median CD4 nadir was 178 cells/mm3. More than 80% of patients were receiving potent antiretroviral therapy. Approximately 40% of patients were homosexual, 23% were injection-drug users, 24% were hepatitis C virus–positive, and 6% were hepatitis B virus–positive.
