Since the advent of potent antiretroviral therapy, the incidence of AIDS-defining cancers has declined, but the incidence of non–AIDS-defining cancers among HIV-infected individuals has risen (JW AIDS Clin Care Dec 22 2008). What about mortality rates for these two types of cancer?
In this U.S. registry-based study, researchers reviewed mortality rates and causes of death for more than 80,000 individuals who were cancer-free when they developed AIDS. Most were in their 30s or 40s at the time; 81% were men, 49% were white, and 33% were black. Individuals were classified according to the year of AIDS onset (1980–1989, 1990–1995, 1996–2006), and mortality rates (deaths per 1000 person-years) were calculated for each of the three periods.
