Understanding the cost of HIV treatment in the U.S. is important not only for patients and clinicians, but also for policymakers and taxpayers, because the majority of these costs are paid for by government-funded programs, such as Medicaid, Medicare, and the Ryan White CARE Act program. Most cost estimates, however, date from before or shortly after the advent of combination antiretroviral therapy (ART), when only a limited number of antiretrovirals was available.
