Effective prevention programs are urgently needed.
We have known for many years that more than half of all new HIV infections in the U.S. occur among men who have sex with men (MSM) and that this is, in fact, the only risk group in the country in which incidence is rising. This year, the CDC reported that the prevalence of HIV infection among MSM is holding steady at an alarming 19%, with significant variations by race, age, education, and income level (JW AIDS Clin Care Nov 1 2010).
