Given that an effective HIV vaccine is not on the immediate horizon, researchers have renewed efforts to eradicate or otherwise “cure” HIV infection. At CROI 2011, researchers described a number of small steps that are being taken in the hope of arriving at a cure; only time will tell whether they are headed in the right direction.

Most HIV-infected patients on suppressive antiretroviral therapy (ART) have residual low-level viremia when tested by extremely sensitive assays. Several research groups assessed the effect of adding an additional agent to standard triple-drug therapy — so-called treatment intensification.
